Situation for Iommi, always in search of a stable vocalist whom he won't find very easily (see the later albums with Gillan and This is the last appearence of Dio on a "Sabbath" album. Posted Saturday, Octo| Review this album | Report (Review #144212) Their label also recently released a compilation album called "The Dio Years". Maybe Iommi and Butler are wating for Osbourne and Ward for a new album and tour as Black Sabbath. Now, this year, this line-up is playing under the name "Heaven and Hell", and they recently released a live album andĪlso a DVD from their tour. It was the desired effect, of course.ĭespite the problems this line-up had then, they reunited in 1992 for another album and tour, and then again another split The cover design obviously also adds "darkness" to the image of this album. Mixing could improve the sound of this album. The same happens with the drums, and the occasional keyboards sound very distant. Vocals sound like he was being overpowered by the guitar and bass (but I don`t think that it really happened in their concerts,īeing Dio a very good singer). Anyway, the guitarĪnd the bass sound great most of the time, very heavy and distorted, adding more "darkness" to the sound of the band. But it has been said that it was mixed during the split of the band, with Dio and Appice leaving the band. Maybe this is one of the things which I don`t like very much from thisĪlbum. Sound levels of the vocals, the drums and the keyboards. The guitar and the bass are at the front of the mixing, above the "Iron Man" is a great song, in my opinion.Ībout the mixing of this album: the audience sounds very distant. Osbourne and Bill Ward, particularly "Black Sabbath", "N.I.B." and "Iron Man". This line-up of the band also played very well the songs originally recorded with Ozzy Vinnie Appice is also a very good drummer, and I like "Neon Nights", "Heaven and Hell " and "Mob Rules" are also very good. Recorded with him on vocals are very good, particularly "Children of the Sea", a song which I also played with a covers band Some of the songs in this album which appear on the studio albums I think that Ronnie James Dio did a very good job with this band. Very good album from this band, recorded during their 1982 tour with Ronnie Dio (as he is listed in the cover) as lead singer, VinnieĪppice as "guest drummer" and Geoff Nichols on keyboards (also lsited as an additional musician). Fortunately and obviously that "hard and dark period of adolescence" passed. In fact, it doesn`t bring me good memories because I was having hard timesĪs a teenager then. I listened to this album for the first time in late 1983. Thanks to Terra Australis for the addition # Mobile crew: Bill Hutcheson, Jim Scott, Scott Stogel # Engineered by Lee De Carlo and Bill Freesh # Recorded with The Record Plant Mobile, Los Angeles # Recorded live in Seattle, San Antonio and Dallas The Sign of the Southern Cross/Heaven & Hell (Continued) (7:15) A rock god if ever there was one, Dio shows his command of the stage with an extended call-and-response medley of “Heaven and Hell” and “The Sign of the Southern Cross.11. Therefore, these versions of “Black Sabbath,” “War Pigs," and “Iron Man” are less likely to coax you into a trance and more likely to remind you of the awesome power of a martial artist. Whereas original drummer Bill Ward treated the doom-metal riffs with a touch of swing, Appice was all about unmitigated battery. Along with vigorous interpretations of Dio-led classics like “Neon Knights,” “Voodoo," and “The Mob Rules,” it’s astonishing to see this lineup apply itself to Sabbath standards from the Ozzy era. The sonic quality is raw and in your face, and the band roars like a well-tuned engine. Though the exact whereabouts of the performances are unknown, it's clear that the recordings are taken from the band’s 1982 tour of America, in support of Mob Rules. Though it precipitated the ousters of Ronnie James Dio and Vinny Appice, Live Evil remains one of the great documents of the Sabbath live machine in action.
